How to Build Resilience

Welcome back to my blog! Today, I thought we could talk about how to build resilience.

Firstly, what is resilience?

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from setbacks, challenges, and stress. It’s not about avoiding difficulties, more about developing the tools to thrive through them. It is very normal to need to rebuild resilience after challenging events, or to need to build it as an adult if you did not have the opportunity to develop resilience during childhood and adolescence.

Here are 5 of my top coaching tips for how you can start building resilience today:

1. Embrace Change!

Change is a part of life. The more adaptable you are, the stronger your resilience will be. Sometimes you may need additional support with this, and that’s okay, but the more able you are to embrace change in the long-term, the easier and smoother life will feel.

2. Practice Self-Awareness!

If you can, try to tune into your thoughts and emotions. When you’re stressed, what thoughts run through your mind? Recognising how you react to challenges helps you develop healthier coping strategies.

3. Build a Support Network!

Surround yourself with supportive friends, family, or professionals who uplift you. Having a community makes tough times easier to navigate. This can be challenging, but joining classes, support groups, or even safe online forums can make a huge difference.

4. Focus on Solutions, Not Problems!

When challenges arise, try to shift your focus to what you can control rather than the uncontrollable, and work toward practical solutions. What can I do about this? How can I move forward?

5. Seek Support!

Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Talking to a counsellor or coach can give you the tools to handle life's ups and downs with confidence.

In my South Bristol based counselling service and in my coaching practice, I provide support to help you build resilience and thrive in the face of challenges. You don’t have to do it alone. Contact me today for a free 15-minute chat.
